Solarig announced on Friday the development of a sustainable aviation fuel plant in the Teruel province. The project carries an estimated investment of €1.15 billion and is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase, with over 180 direct and indirect roles during operation. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, according to the company in a press release. (Source: Solarig press release)
Dubbed Turboleta SAF, the plant will have an annual production capacity exceeding 75,000 tonnes of SAF, equivalent to about 33,000 flights between Zaragoza and London when using a 50/50 blend of SAF and conventional fuel. The facility will be located in the Platea industrial park, occupying roughly 10 hectares, and is expected to be fully operational before 2030. (Source: Solarig press release)
With COP29 emphasizing climate action, Solarig advances its portfolio of sustainable fuels and notes that SAF plays a key role in decarbonizing the aviation sector, a field responsible for around 14 percent of global CO2 emissions from transport. (Source: Solarig press release)
Company projections indicate the project would cut about 340,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and enable the capture and utilization of around 160,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. (Source: Solarig press release)
Photovoltaic, Wind, and Battery Plants
The Teruel facility will integrate directly connected renewable assets: a solar photovoltaic array, a wind park, and a battery storage system. Solarig notes that the resulting job creation will support local development while leveraging existing infrastructure. (Source: Solarig press release)
“This installation places Teruel at the forefront of sustainable fuel production”, says Miguel Ángel Calleja, president and chief executive of Solarig. “The project relies on regional resources such as sun, wind, and water, and it uses biogas and biogenic CO2 produced from local agro-livestock waste to balance emissions.” (Source: Solarig press release)
Solarig confirms support from national, regional, and local public entities as well as major aviation sector companies. The planned plant would join Solarig’s growing portfolio in Spain, which already exceeds 400,000 tonnes of SAF produced annually. (Source: Solarig press release)
Residents and nearby airports, including Teruel and Zaragoza, stand to benefit from locally produced SAF, supporting the decarbonization of air travel, stimulating economic growth, strengthening Teruel’s industrial fabric, and improving quality of life through the creation of high-quality jobs in the Aragon Community. Public Subsidies
As part of the project’s financial consolidation, Solarig has presented Turboleta SAF to the hydrogen production and consumption incentives program (clusters or valleys) run by the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) and financed through Next Generation EU funds. The company aims to help European climate goals and promote large-scale production and use of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. (Source: Solarig press release)
The Teruel project joins Solarig’s Numantia SAF project in Soria, along with other initiatives across Spain that, together, will produce more than 400,000 tonnes of SAF annually. This growth establishes Solarig as a leading developer of sustainable aviation fuel facilities, applying its experience and a circular approach across its Energy and Renewable Gases divisions.
