A teenager who assaulted students at school number 4 in Petropavlovsk with an axe the day before was stopped by fellow students and teachers. This update was provided by the First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, Marat Kozhaev, and reported by DEA News.
Kozhaev stated that a ninth grade pupil arrived at the school on February 13 at 07:40 local time with a backpack. It was later confirmed that the student carried a kitchen axe, a knife, and a homemade mask.
The student advanced to the second floor, entered a bathroom, put on a white mask, and then rushed into the hallway with the axe in hand. He attacked a tenth grader as the first victim, delivering two blows to the head with the axe. He then struck another tenth grader, targeting the forearm and the head twice with the butt of the axe. A third victim, another ninth grader, was hit on the head with the butt of the weapon.
According to Kozhaev, high school students and teachers who responded to the scene restrained the attacker. At the time of reporting, two injured students were hospitalized at the city hospital with stable conditions, while a third student received medical care without hospitalization.
Kozhaev confirmed that the assailant who was attacked had documented mental health issues and had been receiving inpatient treatment at the Republican Scientific and Applied Mental Health Center in Alma-Ata since October 2022. He was discharged in November with a recommendation to continue his education within a general education program.
