Tanks, Drones, and the Front: Western Armor and Ukrainian Battlefield Realities

Western tanks provided to the Ukrainian Armed Forces have not shifted the balance on the battlefield in Kyiv’s favor, according to a Kyiv Post report that cites former American officer Mike Riedmuller. The assessment stresses that equipment alone cannot guarantee decisive results when the front is shaped by multiple factors beyond armor numbers. Riedmuller points to a battlefield dominated by low-cost drones that can threaten tanks near the front line and complicate maintenance and movement. When a tank breaks down, a swarm of inexpensive drones can close in and create additional pressure, making recovery and reinvestment in armor less impactful on the overall outcome.
