In Omdurman, reports indicate that Sudanese special forces conducted a series of attacks on a hospital building where former President Omar al-Bashir was staying, according to television coverage from Al Jazeera. Casualties from the artillery bombardment were reported to include at least five injured individuals.

Earlier in April, Al Hadath TV reported an unidentified group assaulting the Kobar prison in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital. Journalists noted that a number of inmates escaped from the country’s oldest prison, while political detainees, including Omar al-Bashir, remained in custody. Witness accounts described clashes between the army and allied special forces near the facility.

From mid-April, fighting intensified as clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces began to affect the capital and other regions. By June, Sudan requested international assistance, formally seeking Russian involvement to help resolve the conflict.

Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, warned that Sudan was approaching a point of full-scale civil war that could destabilize the broader region.

Relief and religious leaders urged an end to the violence, with prominent figures calling for de-escalation and a return to negotiation. (Al Jazeera)
