At least 13 people were killed and 24 injured as fresh clashes erupted in Wad Al Mahi, a town in the Blue Nile state of southeastern Sudan. Authorities and aid agencies reported that intercommunal violence, which had paused earlier in July, resumed on October 13, resulting in fatalities and further casualties. The situation remains volatile and unpredictable, with a real risk of revenge attacks as tensions persist, according to updates from humanitarian officials on the ground. Displacements have been reported, with approximately 1,200 people forced to flee their homes, though these numbers require verification.

The ongoing unrest has disrupted daily life and essential services. The local market has shut down, creating severe challenges for residents trying to secure basic necessities. Government offices are closed, and officials have imposed movement restrictions, complicating access for humanitarian organizations attempting to reach vulnerable populations and deliver aid.

Cewing into the conflict are two neighboring communities, including the Hausa and Hamaj tribes, whose leaders had previously reached a ceasefire agreement at the start of August. Despite that effort, clashes have continued to be reported within these settlements, undermining stability and delaying humanitarian relief operations.

Within Wad Al Mahi, an estimated 42,200 residents out of a total population of roughly 107,000 are identified as in need of humanitarian assistance. Between the final quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, food security indicators showed a significant portion of the population exceeding the threshold for adequate food access, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability and the imperative for sustained relief and protection measures.
