HE to the field Coia remains Spain’s cheapest supermarket. Not a remarkable recognition given the current prices of food and essential goods.

In a ranking built on a broad price survey, OCU analyzed more than 155,000 products across 1,108 stores in 65 provinces. Vigo’s cooperative chain and the Murcia branch of the same network share the leadership. Along with the French retailer Family Cash, these stores consistently rank among the most affordable choices nationwide.

Across the country, Alcampo emerges as the cheapest option in 23 provinces, followed by Mercadona in 21. Family Cash and Tifer each claim the lowest-price status in six provinces, illustrating a diverse map of regional value.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Madrid hosts two Sánchez Romero locations on Arturo Soria Street and Castelló that are among the most expensive shopping options in the study.

Amid rising prices, the basket of products used for comparison increased by 14.1 percent, marking the second largest jump in the 35-year history of this initiative. A spokesperson from OCU, Enrique García, noted during the presentation that costs have surged by about 30.8 percent over two years, a trend not seen for a long time.

Overall, the study shows that the national average saving amounts to roughly €1,056 per year, representing a 6.2 percent increase in savings from 2022 as families adjust their shopping choices toward lower-priced supermarkets amid inflation.

Regionally, La Rioja, Galicia and Murcia stand out as the most affordable autonomous communities for groceries, while the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands tend to be relatively pricier places to shop.

local chains

Among local groups, Dani Supermarkets in Granada and Jaén, along with Más Ahorro in Córdoba, offer the lowest prices. In contrast, Sánchez Romero, Coaliment, El Economato, and Amazon appear as the more expensive options within the local landscape.
