Workers who are nearing retirement spend time calculating how to reach the minimum pension set by the Social Security system. The pension amount depends on the length of contribution, and computations determine the pension based on those years.
A public institution governs the program. Workers must contribute for at least 15 years to qualify for a contributory pension. However, many citizens over 65 do not meet this requirement, so Social Security has protocols to assist in these situations. To receive help, individuals must meet specific conditions.
What does Social Security require?
All workers who have not yet reached the minimum 15 years of contribution for access to pension must meet parameters set by the SSI. The first condition is that the applicant’s annual income is below 5,899.60 euros. If the applicant lives with family members, this threshold is met when the combined incomes of all family members fall under the established limits. These rules are typically presented in tables that document income or lack thereof.
Pension changes effective October 1 that affect all retirees
Residence in Spain is also required to benefit from this aid. If retirement processes are initiated, a minimum of 10 years is expected, with at least two of those years prior to the application. Once retirement begins, it continues for life so long as the required minimums remain satisfied.

Pension amount: How much will be received?
IMSERSO defines a net base amount of 5,899.60 euros, paid in 12 monthly installments and two extra payments each year. In addition, Social Security may grant an individual amount for each retiree based on the base amount and on the number of beneficiaries living in the same household, as well as personal income or the income of the economic units they share. The result could be as low as a 25% reduction from the stated amount. Consequently, the minimum monthly pension would be around 105.35 euros, while the maximum could reach 421.40 euros.
These disbursements are subject to periodic reviews to recalculate the allocation. As a result, the beneficiary may receive more or less in subsequent years depending on income changes. [Fuente: IMSERSO; normativa vigente al 2025]
