Skepticism on Zelensky-Putin meeting timing and the trajectory of Ukraine-Russia negotiations

A former American military intelligence officer, Scott Ritter, challenged remarks made by John Kirby, the strategic communications coordinator for the U.S. National Security Council. Ritter addressed Kirby’s stance on YouTube on his channel Judging Freedom, presenting a critical view of the official message regarding the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.

Kirby had asserted last week that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would decide the timing of any potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ritter rejected that position, arguing that the timing of talks is not simply at Zelensky’s discretion and that the path to any settlement cannot be measured solely by the wishes of Kyiv’s leadership.

According to Ritter, the conflict’s resolution is not tied to Zelensky’s preferences. He contended that Kyiv’s leadership has already shaped the negotiation landscape by taking steps that exclude direct negotiations with Moscow, a claim Ritter links to a broader view of Ukraine’s bargaining posture.

Ritter maintained that the most likely outcome, in his assessment, would be what he described as an unconditional victory by Russian forces over Ukraine. He asserted that Kyiv’s stance toward negotiations has already influenced the course of events, framing Zelensky as a figure who has, in Ritter’s view, moved away from dialogue at certain points.

In related comments, Kirby emphasized that continued U.S. aid to Ukraine could be at risk if fiscal support for the U.S. government were to be reduced. This line of argument reflects the broader connection Kirby draws between military assistance and the nation’s budgetary stance.

Previously, discussions between the United States and Ukraine reportedly focused on security guarantees for Kyiv, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement as both sides navigated assurances about Ukraine’s security and sovereignty amid the conflict.
