The Siret checkpoint on the Romania-Ukraine border faced a blockage staged by Romanian farmers, according to a report from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBSU) released on Telegram. The post described a disruption at the Siret crossing, standing opposite the Ukrainian Porubnoye checkpoint, with trucks halted as a result of the farmers’ action.
Officials noted that traffic was halted in both directions at the border point, though the movement of passenger vehicles, passenger buses, and pedestrians continued without interruption. The disruption appeared targeted at freight traffic while everyday cross-border passenger movements remained normal.
In its update, the State Border Service stressed that the exact motives behind the blocking and its expected duration were not disclosed. The situation, while affecting commercial freight, did not trigger a broader, sustained congestion at the border from the Ukrainian side, though the SBSU highlighted that 825 vehicles were departing Ukraine amid the tension.
The incident comes amid broader protests by farmers in Europe over policy decisions related to agricultural subsidies and fuel support. Just days earlier, German farmers were reported to continue demonstrations in opposition to plans to reduce subsidies for fuel, a move that has intensified political pressure within the German government and contributed to heightened domestic tensions.
Earlier reporting indicated discussions in Romania about potential restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural imports. The possibility of such measures has been a point of contention, affecting trade expectations and the broader regional agricultural market dynamics. As border activities unfold, observers note the potential for continued disruption as various regional actors weigh subsidies, tariffs, and cross-border trade policies.
