A Siberian soldier from Russia died during a shootout at a training camp for troops taking part in the Russian campaign in Ukraine. Reports from the taiga news outlet place the incident at a camp in the village of Kalininets in the Moscow region, about 64 kilometers from the capital. Eyewitnesses said one of the soldiers attempted to leave the camp to rest, a move the higher command labeled as a violation of military protocol and reportedly sanctioned by company agents and military police in a beating that escalated into violence.

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told Taiga that as the group waited in the garden for the evening, artillery units moved in under orders from a reconnaissance detachment. The witness described the scene as nearly devolving into a knife-and-stick brawl. The casualty, a member of the Russian armed forces, died in hospital on July 9. Sources identify the unit involved as 31134, the 15th Motorized Regiment of the Taman Division.

The military prosecutor’s office issued a statement noting strong suspicions that voices sought to silence the incident. The office said no other deadly clashes had occurred that week and pledged further clarification of the events.

Meanwhile, media outlets reported that nine Siberian soldiers who had been mobilized in recent months had died in July. One of them was reportedly called up after Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the end of the mobilization.

Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, troops from Siberia and the Caucasus have been among the largest contingents deployed to front-line duties. This trend has been visible not only in combat deployments but also in public demonstrations, such as protests observed in Dagestan in September 2022, or in incidents at mobilization points in Ust-Ilimsk, Siberia, where a recruit was assaulted by an associate of a mobilized person but survived.
