Earlier this morning, authorities found the body of an 18-year-old who had gone missing the previous afternoon while swimming at the San Juan reservoir, a Madrid regional police spokesperson confirmed.
The young man disappeared at the Muro beach area. Four youths spent the day in that part of the reservoir when one of them, aged 18, ventured into the water and began swimming deeper. At a certain moment, he called out for help and signaled distress to his friends, who alerted emergency services at 3:10 PM on Wednesday.
Responders arrived soon after, including divers from the Subaquatic Activities Special Group of the Guardia Civil, who conducted searches in the deeper waters where the disappearance occurred. In tandem, two surface units from the Madrid Community Fire Department used boats to sweep the surface and nearby zones.
Also deployed to the search area were on-call teams from Summa-112 and the Red Cross, along with local police from San Martín de Valdeiglesias and Pelayos de la Presa. The search zone remained cordoned off to the public.
Until late evening, the Guardia Civil carried out dives lasting about 40 minutes each, reaching depths of up to 20 meters and covering an approximate area of 1,000 square meters. Water temperature was measured at 13 degrees Celsius, according to the official briefing from the authorities.
Today, drones joined the operation, and the Muro beach and adjacent jetty were closed to visitors. A key challenge in the search was the substantial depth of the sweep area, nearly 20 meters, combined with limited visibility. Persistent rain added another layer of difficulty for teams in the field.
