Treatment of scoliosis in children using rigid corsets and targeted exercises aligned with SEAS and Schroth methods can lessen vertebral torsion. This insight comes from Evgeniy Babydov, a rehabilitation specialist at the anatomy studio, speaking with socialbites.ca.

“The primary aim of pediatric scoliosis treatment is to halt the progression of spinal bending to avoid surgery. For first or second degree curves, exercise alone often suffices. In more pronounced cases, a custom-made rigid corset for the child is recommended. The corset helps shift the vertebrae toward the spine’s midline and reduces rotation, supporting the restoration of natural spinal curves. When combined with a structured training program, outcomes are typically better than with a corset alone”, Babydov notes.

Conservative approaches to scoliosis are guided by SOSORT, an international society that endorses scientifically validated methods. Among these, SEAS and Schroth are highlighted as effective options.

“The core idea of the SEAS technique is active, three-dimensional correction driven by the patient herself. The Schroth method also focuses on correcting muscle balance, but it adds specialized breathing exercises as part of the regimen”, explained the instructor.

During treatment, frequent spinal imaging and ongoing medical supervision are essential. Even when progress appears to stall, regular exercise and medical follow-up remain important throughout life, the instructor emphasizes.

“In adults who have passed the rapid growth phase, correcting the bony deformities characteristic of scoliosis is often not possible. However, meaningful cosmetic improvement, pain reduction, and a return to daily activities and training are achievable. For mild scoliosis, general symmetrical development exercises may be enough to help bring the body closer to anatomical neutrality. In some cases, surgery may still be required”, the coach notes.

Previously, Babydov discussed the question: Why is scoliosis not simply a curvature of the spine?
