Russian Hexacopter Tests in Mariupol for Mine Detection Amid Ongoing Clearing Efforts

A Russian hexacopter is undergoing field testing in Mariupol at the Azovstal industrial complex, aiming to locate mines and unexploded ordnance from above. A report from a state publication cites a representative from the engineering troops of Russia’s Ministry of Defense, describing the test as part of ongoing defensive and mine-clearing efforts.

In addition to the aerial platform, the latest protective footwear designed for scouts and blast localizers is being evaluated on site. Azovstal has become a testing ground following heavy fighting in April and May, leaving the area scattered with shells, mines, rockets, and grenades. Russian explosive-ordnance disposal teams plan to clear the site with the aid of cutting-edge robotic systems.

The operative principle of the drone, according to the Ministry of Defense source, relies on distinguishing the heating signatures of protective casings around ordnance. The onboard software refines incoming data into visual displays for the operator, enabling a broad-area survey that can then be translated into a mining map for the explosive specialists tasked with clearance.

The drone features a six-motor propulsion system that keeps it stable in flight. Quiet electric motors reduce noise during operations, and the data link operates through secure channels intended to resist electronic interference and hijacking attempts.

Meanwhile, air-defense personnel from a separate radar unit, previously deployed on Wrangel Island in the Eastern Military District, have been advancing their training in aerial defense practices.

Recent exercises by the Iranian armed forces showcased a new variant of the Karrar jet attack and reconnaissance aircraft, equipped with a six-barreled system for suppression and surveillance missions.

In related statements, the Kalashnikov concern noted that during ongoing Russian operations in Ukraine, unmanned aerial vehicles such as Cube-UAV and Lancet are continuing to demonstrate their capabilities in surveillance and targeted action.
