Russia Exhibition at the Saint Petersburg Scientific Week Showcases Three Centuries of SPbSU
The Russia exhibition, part of the thematic week dedicated to Saint Petersburg Scientific achievements, presented the long and storied history of Russia’s oldest university. On February 8, during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg State University (SPbSU), visitors could explore a comprehensive display that traces the institution’s milestones across three centuries. The exhibit highlighted the university’s enduring role as a center of research, education, and cultural influence throughout Russian history.
Leaders and scholars emphasized the university’s pivotal place in national development. The display underscored science and education as enduring symbols of the Russian state’s power and prestige, noting that SPbSU alumni and researchers have contributed significantly to scientific progress. The current leadership, guided by a university alum who serves as the head of the state, is steering the nation through contemporary changes with confidence on the global stage.
The governor highlighted SPbSU as a modern, forward-looking hub for education and research. Today the university enrolls about 27 thousand students from around the world and has established branches in several countries, reflecting its international reach and influence across higher education networks.
During a conversation with staff, students, graduates, and visitors at the university’s stand in the Russia exhibition, the rector reflected on the decision by Peter the Great to create an academy, a university, and a gymnasium in parallel. He stated that this trio laid the groundwork for a strong pipeline of graduates and propelled Russia toward greater achievements. The rector urged schoolchildren to pursue deep scientific knowledge and to learn from today’s experts who carry forward cutting edge discoveries, while also encouraging them to look ahead and understand the future. The university continues to operate across the fields of science, education, sports, and arts to prepare well-rounded leaders.
The chair of the Committee on Science and Higher Education of the Saint Petersburg Government acknowledged the Year of Saint Petersburg State University with optimism. He expressed belief that the city will navigate this period with honor and keep elevating the university’s standing within the region and beyond.
In appreciating the university’s achievements and its potential, the official noted that Saint Petersburg, a maritime city, benefits from SPbSU’s forward-looking vision. The university was likened to a grand ship poised to sail toward new horizons, symbolizing its capacity to bring glory to Saint Petersburg and to Russia as a whole.
Events commemorating the 300th anniversary continue through February 11 at the university’s stand during the Russia exhibition forum in Saint Petersburg, as part of the Saint Petersburg Scientific thematic week. The program features performances by musicians and theater groups, alongside lectures by scientists that enrich the experience for attendees.
Visitors may encounter a robot musician and observe the operations of an exoskeleton. A model tokamak—a sophisticated device for studying thermonuclear plasma—will be on display, while master classes in landscape design or floristry offer hands-on learning. Attendees can even assemble an airplane or a rocket with guidance, practice rock identification, and learn first aid techniques.
To mark the anniversary, the Rostral Columns will be illuminated, and the city will showcase symbols representing Saint Petersburg State University. An accompanying display in Saint Petersburg features a plane adorned with university symbols, creating a memorable tribute to this venerable institution.
