RTVE Board Approves 2023 Budgets and Key Contracts Under Interim Leadership

The RTVE Board of Directors, gathered during the interim presidency of Elena Sánchez, approved the fiscal year 2023 budgets on Thursday. Among these, one plan focuses on the creation of a program that will showcase the return of Julia Otero to public television, signaling a notable programming milestone for the network.

RTVE indicated in its statement that the governing body passed the contract proposal with La Coproducer by a clear majority. The arrangement underscores the broadcaster’s ongoing commitment to diverse entertainment offerings and the strategic expansion of original formats across its channels.

The program featuring Julia Otero is part of a slate of nine contracts that received ratification. Other projects include the “Jose Mota Show 5G” (New Line Productions), “El Comodín de La 1” (Glop a Glop), “El Cazador T10” (Mediacrest) and the widely watched “MasterChef” franchise. These selections reflect RTVE’s aim to balance familiar, audience-loved formats with fresh, contemporary concepts across its schedules.

In addition to these productions, three more contracts were approved with NBC Universal. The deals cover the purchase of broadcast rights for four animated series under the collaboration, along with two mini-series for La 2 and eighteen feature films for the same channel. Rights to nineteen additional films were also secured for release on La 1 and La 2, highlighting RTVE’s strategy to strengthen its children’s and general entertainment portfolios through a robust, multi-year content plan.

The Board also endorsed the interim leadership’s presentation of the budgets to Parliament, reinforcing the governance process that supports RTVE’s broad programming commitments. A notable subsidy of 490 million euros was approved, marking an increase of 10.5 percent from the prior year which stood at 443 million euros, signaling continued public support and an intent to expand production capacity and reach across the network’s platforms.

The interim president subsequently urged lawmakers to avoid turning debates into political contention around the broadcaster, calling for a constructive, policy-focused dialogue that ensures RTVE can continue delivering a diverse slate of news, cultural programming, and entertainment to audiences in Spain and beyond. The message underscored the importance of stable, predictable funding and governance that can sustain high-quality productions while adapting to evolving audience needs and technological advances.”
