Romancero: Prime Video Announces New Horror Series in North America

Prime Video is pushing forward with its next fiction project in the country, following a private preview by YOTELE. The horror series Romancero, produced by 100 Balas (The Mediapro Studio), will feature a special appearance by Alba Flores.

The star of Vis a vis and La casa de papel joins a cast that includes Argentine actress Juliet Cardinal, known for roles in El Reino and Maradona: Sueño bendito, among others.

Early on, the project has begun with a young creative team. Sasha Cocola (Roof and Food, Paco’s Men) and Serbian actor Elena Matik, who are making their debut here, join the cast alongside Ricardo Gomez (Backup, Route, Tell me how it happened), Willy Toledo (Midas’ Favorites, Perfect Crime), and Goya Award winner Belén Cuesta (Eternal trench, Call).

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Fernando Navarro and Tomás Peña on a project as original as Romancero,” stated James Farrell, Head of Original Content International at Amazon Studios. “Romancero exemplifies how we shape our international originals, bringing fresh talent both in front of and behind the camera with a distinctly local story and a team at its best. The team cannot wait to share the result.”

“Romancero stands out as a horror series with a strong local voice, an approach that lets us offer a fresh and contemporary view of our traditions and culture,” commented María José Rodríguez, Head of Spanish Originals at Amazon Studios. “The goal is to deliver unique stories and varied voices that resonate with audiences. We believe Romancero will strike a chord across viewers.”

With Romancero, the company advances its commitment to new creative voices and to exploring different conceptual, narrative, and visual avenues. The series holds special significance as the first production from Mediapro Studio LABS, the studio’s incubator for emerging creators. It tightens focus for Prime Video viewers, according to Laura Fdz. Espeso, CEO of Mediapro Studio.

“Romancero is among the most ambitious productions from 100 Balas, a fantasy title that will showcase stunning locations in Almería along with extensive post-production and visual effects,” concluded Alejandro Florez, director of 100 Balas. (Mediapro Studio).

Cornelia (Matic) is a girl whose childhood was stolen. Jordán (Cola) is not a boy, nor is he a man. They are two stranded youths fleeing law enforcement, dangerous supernatural beings, and themselves. The story unfolds in a night of nightmares filled with demons, witches, and blood drinkers, set against a desert and brutal Andalusia that is equally real and mythical, tracing the journey of the oppressed and the escape of the oppressor.

Fernando Navarro and Tomás Peña draw on a wide range of influences, from comics and Gothic literature to stories about witches and ghosts, and even the verses of Federico García Lorca. The setting blends the clichés of rural Spain with supernatural creatures, violence, vengeance, redemption, and love in a stark desert landscape.

Produced by 100 Balas (The Mediapro Studio), Romancero will comprise six half-hour episodes that unfold over a single night. Filming has started in Almería across various outdoor locations, with interior scenes planned in Madrid. Mediapro Studio is behind the project with Laura Fdz. Espeso acting as producer. Javier Méndez, Fernando Navarro, Alejandro Florez, and Maya Maidagan serve as executive producers. Source: Amazon Studios press materials.
