European Escape Turned Crime Scene in Zaragoza

His life rode on a van, a fragile shelter spanning 3,486 kilometers and stretching from one place to another. He had fled the Russian occupation with as much as he could carry, seeking safety in Spain’s Aragon region. Little did he expect that his path would collide with danger in Zaragoza, specifically in the Macanaz parking lot along the Ebro river.

On August 29, the van remained parked in that lot for a few hours come afternoon. In a sudden turn, several individuals forced the vehicle’s lock and looted the owner of jewelry, cash, and numerous personal belongings. The theft did not end there. Mere minutes later, the assailants used the victim’s credit card at multiple gas stations, skimming more than 2,200 hryvnias, roughly equivalent to 60 euros, in fraudulent purchases.

Arrabal neighborhood police quickly responded. Officers of the National Police located two of the card-using thieves and detained them the day after the incident. The Romanian pair, MC and PZ, aged 27 and 41, carried a lengthy record of nearly twenty prior offenses. They were brought before the Investigation Court in the execution of its duties, and both were granted provisional freedom with formal accusations filed against them.

The investigation then intensified in the second phase. With support from the Provincial Scientific Police Brigade, authorities identified two additional culprits, SH and MA, aged 29 and 37, along with another Romanian man and woman who allegedly handled cash—about 4,000 euros and more than 11,000 dollars—and additional jewelry. The agencies continued to trace stolen assets and connect them to the broader operation.

That same day, September 22, investigators, accompanied by a Justice Administration lawyer, conducted a search at the homes of the detainees. Several pieces of stolen property were recovered during the operations. The detained suspects appeared before the court on the afternoon of Friday, September 23, with the president of the Education Court appointed to guard the proceedings and to file formal charges against all involved.

Throughout the case, officials highlighted the rapid mobilization of police resources, the collaboration of forensic investigators, and the ongoing efforts to recover the stolen items and pursue all involved parties. The sequence of arrests and searches demonstrates a coordinated response to credit card fraud and theft in an urban setting, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to public safety and security in Zaragoza.
