A Belgian driver, aged 48, was investigated by the Traffic Guardia Civil for a potential offense against road safety after traveling at 200 kilometers per hour on a section of the AP-7 highway as it passes Orihuela Costa. The offender exceeded the interurban speed limit by more than 80 km/h.
According to the Guardia Civil, the incident occurred on February 18 at kilometer point 767.200 along the AP-7 toll road heading toward Alicante, within the municipality of Orihuela. Officers from the Torrevieja Traffic Detachment conducted a speed control aimed at reducing casualties on this stretch through Orihuela Costa.
While the control was underway, traffic police detected a car moving at 200 km/h in a zone where the limit was 110 km/h, nearly doubling the permitted speed.
The Guardia Civil signaled the driver to stop, and after identification, he was investigated as a possible author of a road safety offense.
Pena de prisión
The officers reported the events to the Orihuela Investigating Court Number 1, acting as a guard on duty. The driver could face prison terms of 3 to 6 months, a fine of 6 to 12 months, or community service of 31 to 90 days, and, in any case, the suspension of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period exceeding 1 year and up to 4 years, according to the Guardia Civil.
The Guardia Civil emphasizes that inappropriate or excessive speed, along with distractions and alcohol consumption, remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. This behavior greatly increases the probability of human errors behind the wheel, endangering the road safety of all users.
