The Minimum Living Income (MLI) stands as a central social policy aimed at reducing poverty and social exclusion within the country. This financial support is granted to households facing economic hardship to ensure a basic, reliable income that covers essential needs. The amount provided depends on household composition and economic situation, with no fixed sum set in stone.

To qualify for the MLI, applicants must meet specific criteria, including legal and actual residence in Spain, belonging to a household unit where income and wealth are assessed, and not exceeding established income and wealth thresholds.

Who can receive the Child Assistance Supplement?

The Child Assistance Supplement is a monthly extra payment granted to families with minor children. Families must meet specific income and wealth criteria to be eligible for this supplement.

Thus, the eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Belonging to a household with one or more dependent minors.
  • Household income must not exceed 300 percent of the thresholds set in the income scale used to calculate the guaranteed rent depending on the type of household unit.
  • The net wealth of the family must not exceed 150 percent of the limits defined in the wealth scale used for calculating the applicable wealth cap according to the type of household unit.
  • Fulfill the asset test, set at six times the guaranteed rent for an adult, with an increment scale equal to the rent limit according to the household type.

Eligibility for the MLI and the Child Supplement can be checked through the simulator available at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). If a family is eligible for the MLI and has a right to the supplement, it is granted automatically. If eligible only for the supplement, a separate application for the MLI is required.

How much does the Child Assistance Supplement pay?

The website of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations states that the amount for this key measure to combat child poverty remains at the 2023 level and is determined by the number of minor children in the household and by the child’s age on January 1 of the given year, following these brackets:

  • Children under 3 years old: 115 euros.
  • Ages 3 to under 6: 80.50 euros.
  • Ages 6 to under 18: 57.50 euros.

These measures provide crucial financial support for families facing vulnerability in Spain. The MLI and child grants not only offer relief, but also reflect the government’s commitment to the well being of its most vulnerable citizens. The initiatives aim to improve living standards and give families a path toward greater economic stability and well-being.
