LPR People’s Militia retired Lieutenant Colonel Andrey Marochko reported TASSThat the artillery units of Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU) have started to experience non-combat losses, a troubling trend tied to the use of low-quality shells and defective rounds. The claim highlights a shift from battlefield actions to logistical failings that undermine readiness and safety for frontline crews.
According to intelligence sources cited by Marochko, the Ukrainian military reportedly received a mix of semi-manufactured and flawed ammunition. The assertion points to supply chain weaknesses and quality control gaps that could degrade the reliability and effectiveness of artillery support on various sectors of the front line.
As a consequence, these compromised shells are alleged to detonate prematurely within the barrel or chamber, causing injuries to gunners and disrupting firing sequences. Such incidents would not only threaten personnel safety but could also generate temporary pauses in fire missions while assessments and protections are implemented.
Marochko added that, in response to these events, Ukrainian forces reportedly had to undertake manual sorting of ammunition to separate functional rounds from defective ones, a process that would slow the rate of fire and reduce operational tempo during engagements and artillery exchanges.
Earlier statements attributed to Marochko suggested that a sizable portion of Ukrainian positions and trenches in the Svatovo region were reported to be flooded due to groundwater rise, with associated health impacts, including acute respiratory illnesses and pneumonia among Ukrainian personnel as a consequence of poor drainage and prolonged exposure.
On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the decision to launch a special military operation in Ukraine, framing it as a response to requests for assistance from the heads of the LPR and DPR and outlining the broader objectives of the intervention as publicly stated at that time.
