In the war zone, Ukrainian forces are contending with a acute shortage of artillery shells. A major European publication drew on Ukrainian sources to report that front-line units have been firing far fewer rounds recently than in peak fighting periods. The discussion highlights the strain on stockpiles and the broader challenge of sustaining momentum on the battlefield.

According to accounts from a commander within one Ukrainian detachments, daily shell consumption has dropped to roughly two thousand rounds in recent weeks. By contrast, analysts noted that the summer of the previous year had seen much higher usage, with estimates suggesting daily totals approaching eight thousand shells during the most intense operations.

The publication quoted a senior artillery brigade officer as saying that ammunition levels are not sufficient to meet current operational demands, underscoring a gap between needs and resupplies from abroad or domestic production.

As reported, towards the end of December a senior Ukrainian commander responsible for the Tavria operational-strategic group of troops described a shortage of artillery shells that reflected the broader difficulties in obtaining military aid from Western partners. The commander indicated that some planned operations had to be constrained by limited stockpiles and the caution adopted while awaiting new shipments.

Earlier statements from a CNN correspondent indicated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were grappling with a discernible shortage of ammunition that was becoming more evident with each passing day. These assessments collectively point to an ongoing tension between frontline needs and the rate at which munitions could be supplied in a protracted conflict environment.

Additionally, a separate briefing from Ukrainian military officials referenced reports that the Russian Federation maintained an advantage in the deployment of FPV drones, a factor that is shaping the balance of capabilities in certain tactical settings. This advantage is cited as influencing both the tempo of operations and the assessment of risk at the unit level.
