A Russian rescue vessel, the Bering Strait, arrived to assist the grounded ship KC Hadong near the port of Shakhtersk, following an incident reported by the Sakhalin region’s main emergency services directorate. This update comes from the press service of Sakhalin and reflects ongoing emergency response coordination in the area.
At two o clock in the early hours, the Bering Strait, which is part of the Sakhalin branch of the Marine Rescue Service, departed Korsakov and headed toward Shakhtersk to render aid to the vessel KC Hadong, which had run aground near the port. The ship was expected to reach Shakhtersk by April 24, 2023, with responders preparing to stabilize the situation and assess any risks to nearby waters and shore facilities.
The crew of the rescued vessel comprises twenty seafarers from South Korea and the Philippines. There were no reports of fuel leaks, a detail confirmed by authorities as they continued a preliminary inquiry in line with Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. This pre-investigation check is standard procedure to determine causes and any safety or regulatory implications following an incident at sea.
Mark Korzhenko, who previously led the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Marine Rescue Sub-Center, noted that the KC Nadong, a Liberian-flagged vessel, had run aground near the port of Shakhtersk on Sakhalin. The statement underscores ongoing monitoring and the coordinated response by regional rescue services to ensure the safety of crew members, protect the maritime environment, and restore normal port operations as swiftly as possible.
