Two paddle surfers were rescued this morning about three miles off Torrevieja after being swept out to sea by a powerful gusty breeze. The incident involved two women, aged 52 and 58, who were brought to the port and evacuated by ambulance. They were assessed for hypothermia and related exposure as a precaution following the encounter with the rough sea conditions.
The rescue operation began when authorities received a report that two paddleboard enthusiasts were enjoying a session but were unable to return to shore due to the abrupt increase in wind strength. The weather shifted quickly, catching them at sea and prompting an urgent response from coastal safety services.
Salvamento Marítimo responded promptly, dispatching Salvamar Leo from its base in Alicante, with additional support from a patrol vessel stationed at Marina Salinas de Torrevieja. The rescue craft carried two local police officers who assisted on scene and coordinated the safety measures as the operation unfolded.
The first responding vessel established contact with the stranded paddleboarders and performed a careful recovery operation to secure them in life jackets and bring them to safety. Moments later, Salvamar Leo arrived and initiated the rescue, lifting both athletes from the water and ensuring their immediate welfare. One of the individuals appeared to be more affected by the cold and showed signs compatible with hypothermia; medical personnel monitored her condition closely during and after the transfer to shore.
The two women were conveyed to the Marina Salinas de Torrevieja, where an ambulance awaited to transport them for further medical evaluation. Official sources from the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) indicated that the 58-year-old woman was evacuated due to hypothermia. Other reports from emergency department personnel noted that the second woman was also referred for hospital assessment to rule out any delayed complications from the exposure. The medical team provided ongoing observation to ensure both individuals recovered safely from the cold exposure and any associated symptoms.
