Reassessing Age and Risk in Colorectal Cancer: Global Trends and Public Health Implications

Colorectal tumors, among the most serious cancers, are increasingly seen in younger patients. Diseases of this organ are appearing in people under 50, reports Vladislav Evseev, an oncologist-chemotherapist and member of the expert council of the Not in Vain foundation, as cited by Lenta.ru.

Evseev pointed out that Russia’s statistics align with global trends, with cancer patients reaching younger ages in many regions. He also noted a slight rise in colon cancer cases. For instance, cases among those under 40 rose from 619 in 2010 to 761 in 2020, while stomach cancer in the same age group declined from 856 to 677 over the same period.

The doctor mentioned that some scientists now consider 45 to be the new lower age limit for cancer diagnosis rather than 50. Still, he stressed that it is not entirely accurate to label cancers as strictly “young,” because the threshold for early detection varies by cancer type. For example, testicular cancer is commonly diagnosed around age 35.

Researchers from Boston, United States, have also observed a trend toward younger cancer onset. They report that cancer is being detected at earlier ages in successive generations. While the precise causes of younger cancer onset remain unclear, environmental factors and dietary changes are thought to contribute to this pattern.

Historically, many patients held myths about cancer. Experts note that in the early stages, some people mistake cancer for a less serious illness and may engage in ineffective or harmful practices, such as overusing pain relievers, visiting saunas or getting massages, or excessive sun exposure. These actions can, in some cases, accelerate malignant growth and complicate treatment. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of timely evaluation and evidence-based care.

There has also been ongoing discussion about how asthma and respiratory infections relate to cancer risk, including debates linked to pediatric Covid-19 outcomes. Health authorities continue to recommend cautious monitoring and preventive care for children with chronic conditions to reduce potential complications.
