The Polisario Front representative in Spain, Abdullah Arabi, warned Saharawi communities this Thursday that they would keep pursuing every available path under international law until their goals of freedom and independence for Western Sahara are realized.

In a video recorded during a conference on Spain’s relations with Western Sahara hosted by the University of Salamanca’s Global Governance Research Center, Arabi commented on what he called a surprising shift in Spain’s stance toward Western Sahara autonomy proposed by Morocco.

He argued that Spain should not abandon its long-standing role in the decolonization process of Western Sahara. Instead of diverging from this path, he asserted that the country must acknowledge its responsibilities and avoid a sudden change in position on Western Sahara.

According to Arabi, embracing the Moroccan option would imply treating the Western Sahara territories as part of Morocco. He noted that the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union distinguish between the Sahara region and Morocco, and therefore they cannot be the subject of any EU-Morocco economic agreement.

Re-establish relations between Spain and Morocco

The Polisario Front delegate in Spain explained that the perceived shift in Spain’s stance aims to repair strained ties with Morocco. He believes that it is possible to maintain amicable relations while safeguarding the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people.

Nevertheless, Arabi emphasized that the ultimate solution must come through peaceful means. He added that good neighborly relations cannot be used to undermine or silence the Sahrawi claims to self-determination.

He described the current situation between Morocco and Western Sahara as ongoing conflict, noting that the Moroccan authorities ended a ceasefire late last year and that Morocco has sought to downplay this development in the international arena.

Arabi affirmed his determination to continue the struggle with the same resolve, relying on the tools provided by international law to pursue freedom and independence for the Sahrawi people until their legitimate goals are achieved.
