Radicalization and Arrest in Teulada: New Details in a Terrorism Case

The central court of Instruction number 5 of the National Court has ordered the detention in prison of a Moroccan man arrested last Monday in Teulada by the National Police on suspicion of ties to jihadist activity. The police accuse him of creating jihadist content in support of the terrorist organization Daesh and publishing it online. In recent weeks, the frequency and radical nature of his posts had intensified.

The police state that the detainee regularly communicated with individuals already detained for terrorism offenses in Spain and Morocco, as well as with jihadists operating in a conflict zone.

The investigations conducted by the General Police Information Directorate and the Alicante Provincial Information Brigade extended the 72-hour period for presenting the detainee to the court, and by late morning the decision was made to place him in preventive detention on charges of terrorist recruitment, indoctrination, autoindoctrination, and glorification of terrorism, according to the police.

According to the authorities, the inquiry began last June 2023 after terrorism experts identified a Moroccan man spreading jihadist content through his social networks. Further investigations confirmed that the detainee, who adhered fully to the ideological tenets of the terrorist organization, resided in Teulada.

Radicalization

The investigation demonstrated from the outset that the individual was in an advanced state of radicalization, with the number and severity of his postings increasing in the weeks preceding his arrest. Police officials indicate that he even produced his own pro-jihadist material intended for open sharing on his social networks.

In addition, investigators confirmed that he maintained regular contact with people already detained for jihadist terrorism in Spain and Morocco, as well as with foreign terrorist fighters in the Syria-Iraq region.

The operation, carried out by officers from the National Police’s General Directorate of Information, with the collaboration of the Alicante Provincial Information Brigade and Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, was conducted under the direction of the central court of Instruction number 5 and coordinated with the National Court’s Prosecutor’s Office.

The police report that during the search of the detainee’s Teulada residence a substantial amount of computer and phone equipment was seized, along with various documents related to the investigation that are currently under analysis by investigators.
