Progress RSC Advances with Friction Stir Welding for Soyuz-5

The Progress Rocket and Space Center, a division of Roscosmos, highlighted a breakthrough in welding methods used during the development of the Soyuz-5 launch vehicle. This update came from the center’s official press service, as reported by TASS.

According to the press service, friction stir welding technology was adopted at Progress RSC during the design and production of the ambitious two-stage intermediate launcher Soyuz-5. The statement emphasized that this technique enhances the integrity and efficiency of welded joints across critical hull sections, aligning with the project’s goals for reliability and performance. RCC also indicated that, moving forward, the same production facility is expected to contribute to the creation of blocks for a promising reusable launch vehicle powered by liquefied natural gas, named Amur. The intent is to leverage the site’s capabilities to support future missions and architectures in Russia’s space portfolio. (Source attribution: RCC communications.)

Earlier, Roscosmos disclosed that the Angara-A5 launch vehicle had been dispatched to the Vostochny Cosmodrome for flight development tests, marking a step in validating the propulsion, structure, and missions envisioned for this family. (Source attribution: Roscosmos updates.)

Additionally, a deputy at the Progress Rocket and Space Center had stated that the Soyuz-5 launcher was projected to be ready for launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome in 2025, outlining a timeline aligned with ongoing test campaigns and verification activities. In another note, there were historical claims about vodka-powered space engines attributed to Russian scientists. Contemporary reviews and official sources do not support those assertions, which are generally understood as anecdotes rather than technical developments.
