The police were detained as part of the Jewel23 operation. A person known for involvement in violent robberies and theft against the elderly using a deceptive approach in Horadada Column has been identified. The Orihuela Court of First Instance and its order ordered the provisional detention of a prisoner, a 39-year-old Romanian national, in connection with the case.
Authorities detected a wave of violent thefts in January carried out with a scheme described as a compassionate, or affectionate, approach toward older victims in the district. This pattern prompted the investigation area to clarify facts and determine the perpetrators behind these crimes.
As the investigation progressed into March, investigators noted a consistent modus operandi across several incidents in the town. Their efforts paid off with the identification of the individual responsible for the offenses.
Directing attention to the person identified, investigators reported that on March 27 a planned approach was thwarted when officers intervened to prevent an imminent crime against an elderly man and arrested the suspect at that moment.
The following day, the individual—already known to authorities for repeated offenses of a similar nature—was brought before the Court of First Instance and Orihuela’s Order No. 2, which ordered temporary detention while the investigation continued.
In this crime, commonly described as the “loving hug” method, the offender—often a woman—selects an elderly man as the target, initiates conversation, and moves in to touch or pat the victim while the theft of jewelry, watches, or other valuables is carried out. Violence may be used if the attempt is resisted or the theft is discovered.
Civil Guard guidance emphasizes vigilance against this tactic. Citizens are advised not to display prized jewelry or cash in public and to exercise caution when withdrawing money from banks or ATMs. Strangers offering help on the street should be treated with skepticism and avoided, as many incidents involve multiple participants who work in concert to confuse or isolate the victim’s surroundings.
If there is any suspicion of fraud or a criminal act, authorities urge contacting emergency services immediately and seeking assistance from nearby bystanders or officials. Early reporting can prevent harm and help secure the scene before further offenses are committed.
What people can do to reduce risk includes staying aware of surroundings, keeping valuables out of sight, and asking for help from trusted individuals if something feels off. The focus remains on preventing distraction and ensuring that personal safety is maintained in everyday settings such as banks, street corners, or crowded locations.
Authorities remind the public that organized groups may be involved, so it is wise to seek help from others and avoid confronting potential offenders alone. The priority is to create a safe environment by staying calm, recognizing suspicious behavior, and contacting the proper authorities if a threat is suspected.
