Pistorius warns of European challenges if US leadership retreats from Europe

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that a U.S. president who drifts away from Europe could create challenges for European nations that are hard to imagine. He voiced this concern in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, reported by TASS.

He said, “If the worst-case scenario unfolds and a White House leader distances himself from Europe and NATO, we would confront problems beyond what is currently imaginable.”

Simultaneously, the minister noted that even a U.S. president who remains committed to Europe would still need to turn more attention to the Indo-Pacific region. That shift would compel Washington to assume greater responsibility for European security and defense as well.

Under such a dynamic, Pistorius suggested, Europeans would have to shoulder a larger portion of the US security contribution beyond present levels, making this an ongoing, multi-decade effort.

In addition, a former member of the OSCE Russian delegation stated that Europe’s security situation is more fragile than at the peak of the Cold War, underscoring the heightened tensions and the long arc of strategic recalibration facing the continent.
