Fans of massive online adventures and devotees of JRR Tolkien should keep an eye on the latest development from Amazon Games and Embracer Group. A new blockbuster is being teased as an open world adventure, driven by narratives from the legendary Middle-earth trilogy, including stories from Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

A fresh interpretation of the Tolkien universe

The project is being developed by the core team at Amazon Games Orange County, the studio behind the popular open world MMO known as New World. The game appears to be in early production stages, with plans for a worldwide launch on PC and consoles. Officials promise more information will follow, including a potential launch window.

Christoph Hartmann, vice president of games for the North American operations, told gamers that bringing a new vision to Middle-earth has long been a goal for the team. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them by Middle-earth Enterprises and emphasized the privilege to work with such an iconic setting.

Lee Guinchard, chief executive of Middle-earth subsidiary Freemode, commented on the enduring appeal of the world: Middle-earth continues to offer fertile ground for creators. He noted Amazon Games’ passion for building immersive, engaging worlds and delivering games to a global audience. The collaboration aims to blend internal resources with top industry partnerships to match the high standards associated with this IP. The objective remains to deliver an MMO that captivates players worldwide.

Expanding a growing catalog

Amazon is actively developing several original IP–based multiplayer projects, supported by studios across multiple regions, including Seattle, Orange County, San Diego, and Montreal. The company also publishes third party titles from partners such as Smilegate RPG, with games like Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty. An upcoming Tomb Raider installment, developed by Crystal Dynamics, is part of the broader portfolio. Meanwhile, preparations for a TV adaptation of Tolkien’s world on Prime Video proceed separately, focusing on adventures in the Second Age that tie into the same beloved universe without overlapping other upcoming open world experiences.
