One neighbor on the same floor of the apartment block where a deadly fire claimed the lives of three family members—a grandmother, a father, and a young boy—recalls waking to the smoke alarms. She lived just two doors down from the apartment where the blaze started and says the smoke was so dense that she could not find a way out when she attempted to leave. Only after firefighters had fully controlled the fire were they able to guide her to safety. The neighbor remained stunned by the tragedy and the news that her neighbors had died in the incident. The victims were a five-year-old boy, his father, and his grandmother.

Marina Costa and Daniel Salas live on the building’s second floor. “We were sleeping when we heard shouts,” Marina recounts. “A person yelled, ‘We need to get out, we have to go,’ and then there was a very loud alarm.” They describe hearing the cries at around 2:15 a.m. and say everyone in the building began evacuating together.

Once outside, the sight of the blaze was impossible to ignore. The Campanar fire in Valencia has stayed on many minds. “Thankfully the firefighters arrived quickly, and the fire was very localized,” Marina notes. “They put it out almost immediately.”

Daniel reflects that as time passed, the images of the event stayed vivid in the minds of those who witnessed it. He says the recollections brought a sense of relief, reassuring them that they were not experiencing another large-scale blaze. Marina adds that fear lingered after the Valencia incident and extended to concerns about the building’s cladding.

When the flames were extinguished, around 5 a.m., the residents began to process the incident one floor at a time. It was only then that they could sleep with a measure of calm restored.

The two young residents emphasize that the building still carries a heavy smell of smoke and that elevators remain clogged with debris. Around 120 people were evacuated from the fire, while others stayed inside their homes for safety. The fire affected a high-rise building that has 24 floors, with the 11th floor of tower 3 specifically impacted by the blaze.

At this time, investigators are examining the causes of the fire.
