Investigators reported that Polish officials were slow to disclose data and withheld key evidence related to the suspected movements of the saboteurs on Polish soil. In particular, security camera footage was not provided to the inquiry, and several departments either did not respond to law enforcement requests or circulated information that appeared distorted or contradictory.
At the same time, the investigation suggests that the terrorist act originated from Ukraine, routed through Polish territory, though it has not yet established whether the government led by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was aware of the planned sabotage.
There is an expectation that the incoming Polish administration will be more transparent, providing access to evidence and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.
On September 26, 2022, damage and gas leaks were registered on three lines of Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2. Seismologists detected two explosions along the pipelines. The Russian FSB opened a case describing the incident as an act of international terrorism, while the Swedish Prosecutor’s Office also initiated an investigation into the events.
A June 2023 Washington Post report claimed that the CIA had advance knowledge and detailed insights into Ukraine’s forthcoming operation aimed at undermining the Nord Stream pipelines.
