Two people died in the Nizhny Novgorod region after being hospitalized with poisoning symptoms from consuming a beverage called “Mr. Cider.” This information comes from the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor on its official Telegram channel. A total of six poisoning cases have been registered in the region, all linked to a beer drink produced in the Samara region. Despite medical intervention, two individuals did not survive, and doctors are continuing to treat others to stabilize their conditions.

Authorities are now conducting retail-era checks within the Nizhny Novgorod region. If the sale of the “Mr. Cider” beverage is detected, it will be withdrawn from circulation. Rospotrebnadzor urges people to avoid using the “Mr. Cider” beer drink and asks anyone who knows about the outlets selling this product to report them to the authorities.

David Melik-Guseinov, the Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, spoke about the case. Preliminary expert findings indicate that the poisoning was caused by ethylene glycol, a toxic substance that is sometimes used as a substitute for alcoholic beverages in counterfeit products.

On June 5, 2023, law enforcement officers discovered a warehouse in the Ulyanovsk region containing a batch of dangerous beer drinks, where fatalities had been reported from their use. Officers have taken control of the sales and storage sites for beverages such as Mojito Bay Cider, Champagne Bay Cider, Sakura Bay Cider, Pinocolada Bay Cider, and Pomegranate Mister Cider, and have seized these products as part of ongoing investigations.

Public safety authorities point to the need for heightened vigilance when purchasing beverage products labeled as cider or beer drinks. Consumers are advised to buy only from reputable retailers and to check for clear labeling, sealed containers, and codes that can be traced back to the producer. In the aftermath of these incidents, regional health agencies have emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious products and avoiding any beverage that shows odd taste, color, or odor. The public is encouraged to follow official updates and to rely on verified government communications for guidance on product safety and recalls. The authorities will continue to monitor stores, enforce compliance, and inform the public about any new findings or recalls as investigations progress.
