A nine-year-old boy who was struck with a hammer by his grandmother has regained consciousness and is now ready to move from intensive care to a general ward. Officials from the Omsk region’s state control service confirmed this update, noting the child’s improving condition through official channels.

Medical teams say the boy has recovered enough to eat and will be transferred from the intensive care unit to a standard hospital ward today. A second child who was involved in the incident remains stable and has been in the general ward since the early stages of treatment, according to authorities.

Officials also reported that the grandmother is in extremely serious condition at this time.

The incident occurred on February 16 in a high-rise building in Omsk. Local reporting indicates the family was preparing breakfast when the mother and father, hearing their nine-year-old son scream from a bedroom, rushed in and found the grandmother standing over the child. It is said she placed the boy on the bed and struck his head with a hammer.

After the family called for an ambulance, the grandmother reportedly fled to another room, grabbed a knife, and injured herself in the neck and abdomen. She then attacked her 86-year-old mother before attempting to flee the scene. Police detained her on the street shortly afterward.

Earlier statements from child rights advocates described the case as a family incident in Omsk in which a pensioner assaulted her grandson with a hammer. The case has prompted ongoing investigations and a focus on improving family safety protocols in the region, with authorities continuing to gather details from involved parties and witnesses. The state control service in the Omsk region provided the latest updates on the situation.
