In Volzhsky, within the Volgograd region, a nine-year-old girl was left alone in an apartment for a full seven days after her mother locked her inside, according to regional authorities.
The regional agency reports that the mother, aged 31, abandoned the child in a rented apartment where the girl had only two packets of instant noodles and a loaf of bread for sustenance. A passerby later spotted a boy on a balcony seeking help and contacted the police. The girl was rescued and then received medical supervision at a hospital.
When the mother later appeared at the police station, she explained that she had traveled to Volgograd for work. She told school staff that her daughter was ill. The woman has two additional children: a seven-year-old son who lives with the father, and a five-year-old daughter who has lost parental rights.
Investigators from the PDN stated they are collecting materials to decide whether the mother should be deprived of parental rights and whether the younger daughter, whose safety was put at risk, should also be affected by such measures.
The mother faces a possible prison sentence of up to three years for failing to meet her parental responsibilities.
In a separate case from Krasnoturinsk, a 19-year-old former inmate was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for throwing a two-month-old baby from a window, according to court records.
