A 19-year-old named Nikita Zhuravel was escorted to the Grozny Visaitovsky District Court for the first hearing of his case, scheduled to take place on October 13. This update came to light through journalist Ksenia Sobchak on her Telegram channel, which has the moniker “Bloody Lady.”

Reports indicate that the defendant’s parents traveled from Volgograd to attend the proceedings in person.

The initial court session for Zhuravel had been set for October 9, but it was postponed because the defendant did not arrive at the hearing that day.

Earlier this year, on May 19, a video circulated widely on social media showing a 19-year-old individual burning a copy of the Quran inside the Cathedral Mosque in Volgograd. In testimony, Zhuravel claimed that the act was carried out under instructions allegedly issued by Ukrainian security services in exchange for a reward of 10,000 rubles.

Following the incident, authorities detained Zhuravel. At the request of the public, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation redirected the criminal case for handling to law enforcement agencies in Chechnya, and on May 27 he was transferred to a pre-trial detention facility in Grozny.

Subsequent statements from Zhuravel alleged mistreatment in the detention facility, including claims of abuse. In late September, Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s head, released a video showing his son Adam Kadyrov confronting the defendant. The official described the encounter as a display of support for his son’s actions and stated that he respected the decision taken by his family. Additional context and perspectives were referenced in later coverage by Newspapers.Ru.

In related diplomacy, statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry earlier warned about the potentially severe international ramifications of burning sacred texts with little restraint.
