At the start of 2024, the government led by Pedro Sánchez announced a set of measures designed to support households in the coming legislative period. The plan includes waiving fees for commuter and medium-distance trains, as well as for state-managed buses, alongside housing assistance and a reduction in value-added tax on basic food products.
Another notable government initiative from 2022 and 2023 was the provision of a one-time 200 euro payment aimed at individuals experiencing vulnerability due to low income or limited assets.
The financial aid was offered in two separate phases: the first phase closed its application window on September 30, 2022, and the second phase accepted applications until March 31, 2023. Both phases were part of a broader package of measures to mitigate the economic and social impacts of the Ukraine conflict.
Eligibility for this support included workers, self-employed individuals, or recipients of unemployment benefits in 2022. Those excluded from the aid included recipients of the Minimum Living Income, pensioners under the general or special social security systems, beneficiaries of pensions from the State Passive Classes Regime, or people affiliated with mutual benefit societies acting as alternatives to the RETA (the Special Social Security Regime for Self-Employed Workers).
Additionally, those with total income exceeding 27,000 euros in 2022 or with net assets over 75,000 euros (excluding the primary residence) were not eligible for the aid.
The application period ended on March 31, with payments issued within the following three months. Denied applicants had the right to file appeals.
Is there a new 200 euro aid in 2024?
Regarding continuation in 2024, even though several 2023 supports were extended into the new year, the 200 euro payment is not among them. The tax agency clarifies that this was an occasional payment made in 2022 and repeated in 2023, with no current plans to renew it in 2024.
