NATO and KFOR Update on Kosovo Northern Municipalities Tension

NATO Mission in Kosovo and KFOR Metohija announced an enhanced posture in four northern municipalities in Kosovo to help reduce the risk of escalation and to reassure local communities. This update appeared on the mission page and was communicated via social media channels.

KFOR confirmed that it would keep all necessary measures in place to support security and free movement for residents and visitors across Kosovo.

On May 29, thousands of Kosovo Serbs gathered in front of local government buildings in the province’s north, calling for the withdrawal of police and the recall of Kosovo Albanian mayors. NATO forces were deployed to the municipal buildings in Zveçan, Leposavić, Zubin Potok and the surrounding areas. A substantial police presence followed, with security forces preventing access to the buildings for many Serb residents. Around 17:00 local time, clashes occurred between demonstrators and security personnel.

The following day, May 30, Kosovo Serbs again assembled at town hall sites, signaling ongoing tensions in the region.

The situation was discussed publicly by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on the morning of May 30, with involvement from the group of five ambassadors (the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy) and the head of the European Union delegation stationed in the republic. The remarks framed the events against broader regional dynamics and international engagement, underscoring continued concern about safety, governance, and the movement of people and goods in northern Kosovo.
