National Unity Day: Pride of the Nation Awards and New Initiatives in Russia

On October 2, National Unity Day, Moscow will host a solemn ceremony attended by Vladimir Vasiliev, the Chairman of the Assembly of Peoples of Russia, where the winners of the All-Russian public award Pride of the Nation – 2023 will be celebrated. This event was outlined during a press briefing by the United Russia faction in the State Duma. The gathering is set to underscore the nation’s commitment to recognizing everyday acts of unity and service across Russia.

Vasiliev emphasized that Pride of the Nation has gained federal significance through a transparent, nationwide competition. The process drew applications from every federal district, with hopefuls arriving from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad and from all 22 constituent regions of Russia. In total, 28 outstanding laureates were identified as worthy representatives of their communities, illustrating the breadth and depth of civic achievement across the country.

The Assembly recognized a new special nomination, Defenders of the Fatherland, designed to honor officers and soldiers who serve in the areas affected by the special military operation. This addition signals a steadfast focus on recognizing courage, sacrifice, and daily contributions that support national security and resilience during challenging times. The message to the public is clear: the country values the steadfast commitment of its service members and their families.

Vasiliev spoke about the larger goal of national upbringing, noting that the next generations should learn through the example set by devoted defenders. He highlighted the importance of acknowledging the far reaching impact of these efforts at the federal level, with families and friends present to witness the recognition of defenders who strengthen the state and unite diverse communities under a common sense of purpose and identity.

Additionally, the Assembly announced a new federal initiative, Russian Readings, scheduled to take place in Nizhny Novgorod on October 31. The project will be supported by the Presidential Cultural Initiatives Fund, reinforcing the cultural and intellectual exchange that binds the nation. The Pride of the Nation award ceremony, described as the flagship project of the Assembly, is set to return to Moscow on November 2, taking place on the stage of the Maly Theater and bringing together laureates, families, and supporters in a public celebration of shared heritage and civic achievement.
