National Police arrested the former president connected to the Marist Student Parents Association (Apamar) over the alleged allocation of about 28,000 euros from one of the two accounts managed under the organization. Elías S., who spent two nights in the Alicante Provincial Police Station cells, is scheduled to appear in court today on duty. He has replaced the previous head of Apamar, who filed a criminal complaint alleging another embezzlement totaling 117,340 euros.

A member of Apamar’s board, who resigned amid the latest scandal, reported the former president to the National Police in early March and was arrested last Monday by agents from the Economic Crimes Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade in Alicante.

As this publication previously noted, the funds alleged to have been misused by the former Apamar leader were charged via a debit card linked to the SAE account, the School Assistance Service. This account covers expenses for students’ college activities and supplies in case of the parent’s death or permanent disability.

The fraudulent charges occurred within a three-month window, listing expenditures such as 500 euros at a restaurant in Alicante and another resort with a charge labeled as “beauty.” Additional withdrawals were made at supermarkets, for home delivery services, and even gambling venues.

Management at Sacred Heart College Marist Brothers in Alicante has appointed a new head for Apamar’s steering committee, with elections planned to form a fresh board.

bank failure

It has not yet been disclosed whether the imprisoned ex-president testified at the police station or exercised the right to remain silent. When the situation came to light at the school, there was speculation that it involved a bank error tied to a contactless payment made via a mobile device.

Following news of the new financial shortfall at Apamar, the management of Colegio Maristas confirmed that it had identified the issue. The irregular activities were not specific to the SAE account and were uncovered by a board member with provisional authority while processing a material purchase payment for an SAE beneficiary.

Apamar oversees two accounts, and in both cases the alleged embezzlement involved funds from the SAE account. The organization offers support for children’s expenses and materials through the end of the university phase, covering events such as accidents or deaths within the family. Participation is optional, with enrollment typically open at the start of the academic year and renewed annually according to the school principal. The aim is to assist families in meeting essential educational needs during challenging times, complementing the school’s broader mission to accompany students throughout their schooling journey. This overview reflects accounts and procedures described by school administrators and court records, and is cited here for contextual understanding of the events as reported by local authorities and media outlets (as documented in public records and news reports).
