National Police Detains two Suspects in Alicante Scooter Theft Spree
A 30 year old man was arrested in Alicante at the beginning of March as a precautionary measure. He is accused of stealing about twenty scooters over a period of three months. A 54 year old woman, who allegedly accompanied him on five of the thefts and performed surveillance duties, is also detained. Police say the man was responsible for two robberies, one at a car and another at a cafeteria, during which 13 scooters and a bicycle were stolen and a credit card was seized. Police sources estimate the scooters were worth 11,694 euros.
Beyond these confirmed incidents, the National Police suspect the detainee may have been involved in the theft of several other scooters in Alicante. However, there is currently no evidence or video linking him to those additional thefts.
Clearance of a Scooter Theft Wave
An investigation conducted by the Alicante Northern Territory Police Station is credited with ending a documented surge in scooter thefts across the province. Thefts were reported in locations such as shopping centers, gym entrances and even areas near restaurants along San Juan beach.
The woman who accompanied the now imprisoned man denied taking part in any thefts following his arrest, but she admitted that on some occasions she had been with him. Police allege the man stole the scooters and then quickly sold them to fund drug use, noting that he was addicted to drugs at the time of the incidents.
The couple was apprehended on February 28 after investigators had gathered substantial evidence indicating their involvement in a series of robberies. The scooters were typically secured with chains, but the suspect allegedly used a pair of pliers to break the locks and seize the vehicles.
