Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz announced a significant new discovery during today’s briefing. The find points to a potential reserve of natural gas that could reach up to one billion cubic meters, a figure analysts say would help the country advance toward greater energy self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on external supplies. The discovery sits in an unspecified area, and investigations are ongoing to delineate the resource more precisely and outline a path for responsible development that aligns with Ukraine’s broader energy security goals.
Geological assessments cited in the release indicate that the field could hold as much as one billion cubic meters of gas. Drilling operations have been conducted at depths exceeding 4,000 meters, using advanced drilling and testing techniques to assess rock formations, pressure, and reservoir quality. The company stressed that the data collected so far supports a favorable outlook for sustained gas production if development proceeds in a measured, safe, and environmentally responsible manner.
Oleg Tomachev, CEO of UkrGazVydobuvannya, a Naftogaz subsidiary responsible for exploration and production, commented on the findings. He noted that the discovery offers a clear opportunity to expand gas reserves and secure a more resilient energy mix for Ukraine. His remarks emphasized a strategic shift toward growing domestic gas production as part of a broader plan to support sustainable growth in the sector and to strengthen national energy sovereignty over time.
In addition to this recent discovery, Naftogaz reminded stakeholders that the company has recently commissioned two natural gas wells. These wells are designed to boost daily extraction capacity by more than 430,000 cubic meters, contributing to a steady increase in domestic gas supply. The firm described this move as a practical step in building a more robust gas production base and improving the reliability of supply to Ukrainian households and industry.
Since 2014, Ukraine has actively sought to reduce or eliminate gas imports from Russia, aiming to diversify its sources of energy and strengthen strategic autonomy.
