After a brief thaw in Moscow this week, temperatures are expected to fall again as frosts strengthen, according to Alexander Ilyin, a forecaster with the Meteo forecast center. Snowfall is not anticipated before the weekend, and observers note that the shift toward colder air will dominate the pattern in the near term.
Forecast models indicate that tonight the southern edge of the area will see a retreat of the active wind system as high pressure begins to nudge into the region.
“The upcoming period will bring a return of colder conditions after the thaw,” Ilyin stated, emphasizing that the cold will reassert itself in the days ahead.
Overnight, temperatures in Moscow and the surrounding Moscow region are expected to dip to minus six to minus eleven degrees Celsius, while Monday afternoon may see readings around minus two to minus seven degrees. A similar weather pattern, with light snow chances, is expected on Wednesday as the atmosphere remains unsettled but not strongly conducive to heavy snowfall.
During the afternoon hours, sleet and rain may affect the capital, potentially leading to a crust on road surfaces and more challenging driving conditions. Officials advise motorists to use caution and adjust travel plans accordingly.
Forecasters reiterate that significant snowfall is unlikely through the end of the week. On the first day of December, calmer winds and clearer skies could accompany a brief period of light snowfall, creating a mild, visually appealing winter day for many residents.
The Hydrometeorological Center has warned of dangerous weather conditions across most parts of the European section of Russia. The forecast calls for heavy, wet snow, snowdrifts, ice, sleet, and winds reaching 15–20 meters per second in numerous regions within the Central Federal District.
In addition, forecasts remind residents that the upcoming winter is expected to bring warmer-than-average conditions to much of Russia, with temperatures near or above normal for many areas in the coming months.
