Approximately 2,950 people have died and more than 5,600 were injured in the September 8 earthquake that struck Morocco, according to latest official tallies. The quake registered a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, and authorities have emphasized that the disaster continues to unfold with ongoing rescue operations and assessments in affected areas.
The Moroccan Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the confirmed death toll stands at 2,946, with 5,674 people injured to date. The epicenter lies in the Al Haouz region, which has borne the brunt of the disaster, recording 1,684 fatalities and extensive damage to communities in the area.
Following Al Haouz, the Taroudant provinces have reported 980 deaths, Chichaoua 202 deaths, Ouarzazate 41 deaths, and Marrakech 18 deaths. Additionally, 11 fatalities were confirmed in Azilal, five in Agadir, three in Casablanca, and one each in Youssoufia and Essaouira. In total, authorities have confirmed 2,944 fatalities, with many victims buried as search and rescue teams continued to comb affected neighborhoods for survivors and remains, alongside the broader relief and recovery efforts coordinated by Moroccan agencies and partners.
