Igor Postolache, a 32-year-old Moldovan, was arrested as the alleged perpetrator in a deadly stabbing and an alleged attempt at sexual assault following the murder of Erika Yungathé, a 14-year-old girl, in Oviedo. The incident occurred on the landing of the first floor at number 69 on Vázquez de Mella street. According to investigators, Postolache then moved the knife he had used to Asturias prison, where he sustained self-inflicted injuries during transport. He stabbed the victim in the neck and face, inflicting a fatal wound that punctured a lung.
Experts and witnesses reconstruct the sequence of events as beginning around 3 p.m. on the fifth of the month. The assailant allegedly began stabbing the young woman on the stairs between the portal and the first floor. The first blade allegedly punctured a lung from a deep stab behind her back, yet the attacker continued with additional blows to the face as she fell down the stairs and collapsed on the descent.
A blood trail marks the assailant’s route as he dragged Erika into the interior of apartment 1ºE, a flat Postolache had rented since March 22. When the victim’s brother and father realized the window of time was passing and Erika did not respond, they went downstairs. They found only scattered clothing and blood traces at the portal and called the police immediately.
Officers gained entry to the apartment through a window from the interior courtyard, assisted by a neighbor. Inside, Erika lay dying. The main suspect barricaded himself in the bathroom. Despite efforts to revive him, the officers could not save him, and he eventually surrendered. He emerged with multiple stab wounds on various parts of his body and hands, though none were life-threatening enough to prove fatal on their own. He was rushed to the hospital for hours-long surgery, facing complications from significant blood loss.
As efforts to stabilize the alleged killer continued, news of the incident sent shockwaves from Vázquez de Mella through Asturias and across Spain. Erika’s body was removed for transport to the Forensic Institute of La Corredoria, where an autopsy was conducted approximately three hours after death. The findings will be crucial in clarifying the remaining questions surrounding the crime. Erika’s parents, joined by several sisters from La Inmaculada who support the family, watched the van depart with their daughter amid loud cries from the window where neighbors gathered to say farewell.
Forensics ruled out sexual assault as a cause of Erika’s death. Investigators noted that the stabbing and the transfer of the detainee’s body from the landing to the ground likely occurred in about ten minutes. The prosecutor charged Postolache with possible attempted sexual assault based on the circumstances, and authorities continue to document a history of minor abuses attributed to him in recent years, despite a prior arrest. The investigation remains focused on establishing a complete account of the events and any prior allegations.
At present, Postolache remains the sole suspect from the perspective of the justice system. He has lived in Soto de Trubia for more than a decade and reportedly refused to cooperate with authorities, declining to testify before the judge. He did not request a public defender or arrange a lawyer, and the court ordered his transfer to the Asturias prison, where he was placed under close supervision to prevent a possible suicide attempt. Erika’s mother, while deeply grieving, did not wish to comment on the case, and the community continues to seek answers to the tragedy while supporting Erika’s family.
