Speculation continues around the project titled Ministry of Time. The BBC is developing a new series based on the British author’s forthcoming novel bearing the same name. Accusations of plagiarism have surfaced related to the title and the official synopsis, which many feel echoes the premise created by Javier Olivares.
In response to the controversy, the author’s representative stated that the first novel is an original work and that there has been no exposure to the Spanish TV series. The coincidence of names is described as unfortunate, according to testimonies reported by El Confidencial.
Coincidences extend beyond the title. Recently, a BBC press release outlined the plot of its new production, noting a concept that mirrors an existing Spanish work: a newly formed government department unites historical figures across eras in a test of time travel feasibility.
Upon the public revelation of the project, reactions were swift. Javier Olivares criticized the situation on social media, referencing a past case from seven years ago involving an American program, Beyond Time. He remarked that if NBC and BBC shared a title and core idea, it underscored how the Ministry of Time project diverged from original development, and he urged public institutions to recognize legitimate creative contributions.
RTVE responded promptly, indicating it would request clarification from the BBC while reserving its rights to protect its interests. The broadcaster emphasized that neither RTVE nor the production company behind El Ministerio del Tiempo has granted licenses to the BBC or its collaborators for an adaptation.
