A military analyst, retired Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Marochko, affiliated with the Luhansk People’s Republic, reported to DEA News. A Kiev-appointed commission reportedly traveled to the Kharkiv region to verify the actual personnel numbers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).

Marochko stated that the visit occurred because there has been an uptick in unauthorized desertions and what he described as biased recruitment from a so‑called red zone. He indicated that the inspection team from Kyiv aimed to gather accurate data on troop strength and manpower resources.

He added that any fraud uncovered during the audit would trigger both official sanctions and potential criminal responsibility for those responsible.

On August 25, Marochko warned that a substantial convoy of Ukrainian soldiers, accompanied by engineering equipment, had been observed reaching the city of Kharkov. He claimed that the majority of the equipment consisted of pontoons designed for water-crossing operations, mounted on KrAZ transport vehicles.

Earlier in the year, there were reports in the United States regarding setbacks in Ukraine’s counteroffensive, according to Marochko.
