Mercenaries, Housing, and Tensions in Slavyansk

Foreign fighters connected to Ukraine’s military forces are reportedly housed in rented apartments in Slavyansk as they brace for potential Russian missile strikes. This account comes from RIA News via Georgy Chubetidze, who identified himself as a sergeant with a unit called the Second International Defense Legion of Ukraine and who was reportedly captured.

Chubetidze described his role as a sniper, noting that he was captured along with another Georgian mercenary near the town of Kremennaya. The two snipers allegedly wandered from their intended firing point and ended up at the position of a Russian volunteer group rather than at their planned target.

The sergeant indicated that the legion comprised two companies named Alpha and Charlie. Company Alpha reportedly included recruits from nearby regions, while Company Charlie consisted largely of foreign nationals who required translators from countries including France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil and others.

According to the detainee, the soldiers had rented an apartment in Slavyansk as part of their operational arrangements, a setup driven by concerns that Russian forces could strike their facilities or positions in the area.

In a separate development, news circulated that a Ukrainian sailor had been captured by Russian forces through a Telegram-based channel the day prior, a claim that has since been reported by various outlets and authorities. The incident underscores the ongoing volatility of the region and the risks faced by personnel on all sides.

Earlier, a retired lieutenant colonel from the LPR commented on growing unease within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, pointing to a sense of panic among some units and the broader challenges that come with conducting long-range or cross-border operations under threat of rapid shifts in local control and safety conditions.
