Mercadona, a physical supermarket and online sales company, launched a national citrus campaign for 2023/24 with an estimated purchase volume of 220,000 tons. This figure marks a 10% rise over the prior campaign. The campaign begins with tangerine and lemon arrivals in October, sourced from Spain. By early November, the national orange program gradually enters Mercadona stores.

The national tangerine campaign runs from October through May, while the lemon season starts in October and continues through June. The orange season begins in November and is expected to extend through August. Mercadona remains firmly committed to the primary sector, ensuring stable and transparent relationships with its 24 national suppliers and working with more than 2,800 farmers across Spain.

As part of its dedication to regional produce, Mercadona will market citrus fruits from plantations in the Valencian Community, Andalusia, the Region of Murcia, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands.

Encouraging citrus and seasonal fruit consumption for a balanced basket

Beyond promoting citrus consumption, Mercadona offers freshly squeezed orange juice in the Fruits and Vegetables section in three common sizes: 250 milliliters, 500 milliliters, and 1 liter. This service, introduced across all stores in 2016, represents a collaboration between Mercadona, specialist supplier Zumex, and the customers themselves.

Citrus fruits provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to a balanced diet. Oranges, tangerines, and lemons are ideal partners for a well-rounded shopping basket.

Mercadona supports the campaigns of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food within the framework of the #alimentosdespaña strategy and the campaign “The richest country in the world.” The company maintains fair business practices and adheres to the Code of Good Business Practices in Food Contracting, a voluntary standard that promotes fair trade. The measures to improve the functioning of the food chain are endorsed by MAPA in cooperation with various associations across the Spanish agri-food sector.
