Medical guidance on analgesics and when to seek care for persistent pain

When pain appears, taking analgesics can provide relief, but the bigger question is what causes the symptoms in the first place. Dmitry Tarasov, the Chief Physician of Chelyabinsk City Clinical Hospital, emphasized this point in an interview with Moskovski Komsomolets, underscoring the importance of understanding the underlying reason for discomfort rather than treating it in a vacuum.

Tarasov noted that if pain persists for more than two to three days after taking analgesics, a medical consultation is essential. Medicines should not be used without supervision, especially for people over 65 or those with ulcers, as they are more prone to adverse effects. The message is clear: self-medication carries risks, and professional assessment helps tailor safer, more effective care.

Nonetheless, medications themselves are not something to fear. Data show that using the maximum recommended dose for up to ten days is associated with a relatively low incidence of minor side effects, around nineteen percent. The risk drops when medications are used exactly as directed. Conversely, if a drug is counterfeit and lacks an active ingredient, the chance of adverse effects increases, estimated at about sixteen percent in such cases.

A different point from therapist Solomatina highlights another nuance: taking painkillers more than fifteen times in a single month over a three-month period can aggravate headaches, leading to what is often called drug-induced headache or rebound pain. In those situations, seeking medical advice is definitely warranted to adjust treatment and rule out other causes of persistent pain.

Earlier discussions have addressed the various causes behind visible changes in urine color, including red, blue, or orange tints. While these conversations may seem unrelated at first glance, they illustrate how doctors approach seemingly simple symptoms with careful scrutiny to identify underlying health issues, rather than assuming a single cause or relying on over-the-counter fixes alone.
